670 Unid. ?? ?? ?? - 10 Mar 2012 0200 - Found some strange unidentified 875 Hz pips at about 0200 TOH while reviewing WSCR silent period recordings. No idea what this might be. Maybe KBOI engineer playing around? I wouldn't think so... [Spectrogram] [Audio Clip] (M37V) update: Turns out someone else recorded these same pips at the same time, but on 770 kHz during a presumed Radio Rebelde program. So, this was probably Radio Rebelde broadcasting the pips. (Tentative)
Unid. ?? ?? ?? - 10 Mar 2012 0100 - Reviewing my recordings some more, I note there is another spanish language station underneath the Rebelde programming. I have no idea who this is, and it'll probably be too hard to dig it out. (M37V) (Tentative)
KBOI USA ID Boise - 10 Mar 2012 0107 - I am happy to report that the KBOI DX test was easily heard here in Los Alamos despite interference from KLTT Commerce City CO and especially from a 1 kHz tone caused by the high power Radio Rebelde transmitter in Cuba broadcasting on 671 kHz.

Here is the what I heard during the first segment of the DX test:
- Antenna pattern change to non-directional at about 1:07 AM MST, making KBOI audible, where before there wasn't a trace of it to be heard.
- Voice announcement 20 seconds in: "KBOI Boise. We are pausing programming to do some technical maintenance and adjustments. Please stand by. We'll be back shortly."
- 16 upward sweeps spaced about 2.5 seconds apart, starting at 29 seconds.
- Intermittent music starting at about a minute and 8 seconds.
- Morse code "KBOI BOISE IDAHO" 4 times, alternating between a 1 kHz tone and a 700 Hz tone, starting at about 1 minute and 49 seconds. The 1 kHz het from Rebelde made it hard to decode the 1 kHz morse code, but you could tell it was there.

If there was a voice announcement associated with the 2nd segment of the test, I did not hear it:
- Morse code starting at about 1:36 AM MST, same message as before, but repeated only once at each tone.
- 2 upward sweeps
- a collage of pieces of music
- 2 more Morse code IDs
- 5 more sweeps.
- antenna changed back to night pattern making KBOI disappear from my radio.

Also heard after reviewing my 5 hour recording of 670 kHz, a 3rd segment of the DX test! I only heard about 15 seconds worth at about 1:51 AM MST, and it consisted of a Morse code ID on top of some Christmas music ("It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year")

Audio clips: [First Segment] [Second Segment] [Third Segment]. 50 kW, 742 miles (M37V) (New - #350, ID #1)

KLTT USA CO Commerce City - 10 Mar 2012 0000 - Heard quite often during WSCR down time was KLTT with religious programming. WSCR USA IL Chicago - 10 Mar 2012 0000 - Also heard at various times during the 5 hour recording was WSCR with sports talk, although they were off the air for a couple hours from 1:00-3:00 AM MST along with WGN and WBBM for maintenance work on the WBBM transmitter. (M37V) (Relog - KBOI DX Test)

More than one transmitter here, because occasionally you could hear them echoing against each other. 1490 KRSN USA NM Los Alamos - 21 & 22 Jan 2012 12:00 - 12:10 - KRSN's new transmitter site is only a mile from my house, so it wasn't hard to hear this one. Besides, I haven't officially relogged this one since they relocated their transmitter from White Rock. On this occasion, KRSN was running a DX test, which I organized for the station. The test program consisted of voice announcements with phonetic IDs ("Kilo Romeo Sierra November"), fast Morse code IDs at a medium pitch (700 Hz) and also at a high pitch (5 kHz), a telephone off-hook warning signal and some tone sweeps. 11 confirmed reception reports came in and I sent out 11 QSL cards [Here's a picture of one]. [Audio clip #1] is the 10 minute test program. [Audio clip #2] is how it sounded in Lakewood, CO. (M37V) (Relog - DX Test)

KBST USA TX Big Spring - 28 June 2006 1950 - Texas Rangers baseball, into local break with ID and commercials. Didn't last long before fading back into the graveyard gumbo. [Audio Clip] 1kW-U, 374 mi. (RCA) (Relog - )
KRSN USA NM Los Alamos - 22 June 2006 1300 - While driving today, I pushed the button for 1490 on my car radio and there was KRSN, running the WaveStation test loop. I stopped in at the studio to see what's up. I talked to the new owners, David and Gillian Sutton, who are lifelong residents of Los Alamos. They told me they have until July 5 to get the radio station back on or return the license to the FCC. Today, they were trying to get a kill switch installed at the transmitter site, which the previous owner had neglected to do. Also, they have installed a "Digital Transfer Line" for their STL to replace the horrible double-hop microwave link that was always going out. Format is to be local programming! Yay! Local interest programs and news in the mornings and music the rest of the day, plus local high school sports and county council meetings, etc. They bought a library of 4500 popular songs spanning the fifties through the nineties, and are interested in any suggestions for programming from the community. New web site is http://www.krsnam1490.com but there's nothing there yet. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask about AM stereo, but I assume that didn't get installed. Next time I visit the studios I'll make a gentle suggestion... (Relog - was silent)
KZZN USA TX Littlefield - 27 Oct 2005 0040 - C&W music, "The Great American Music Station, AM Fourteen-Nintey, broadcasting music, news and weather to Littlefield and Muleshoe". [Audio Clip] 1kW-U, 262 mi. (RCA) (Relog - )
KXRE USA CO Manitou Springs - 13 Jul 2005 0213 - Spanish language, norteno music, call sign ID. This logging made possible because my local KRSN has shut down. Goodbye KRSN till new owners bring it back up (maybe). 500/1000, 217 mi. (rodeo) (Relog - )
KRTN USA NM Raton - 12 Feb 2004 0800 - Work cancelled today because of snow. Yay! Finally was able to adjust the RS loop just so to null out local KRSN enough to hear this one announce "AM Fourteen-Ninety, KRTN Raton, New Mexico" at TOH after playing some C&W music. [Audio Clip] 1kW-U (sony + RS loop) (Relog - )
KRUI USA NM Ruidoso Downs - 21 Jan 2004 1500 - Local KRSN was tuning their transmitter with a 1kHz tone about this time. Fortunately, they turned off the tone and left an open carrier for a couple of minutes spanning TOH. Heard Doctor Laura, some local ads, legal ID at TOH, then into ABC news. Surprising how strong this station was in the presence of KRSN's OC. Also another station underneath, but too weak to be intelligible. 1kW-U (ford) (New - #183, NM #35)
KRSN USA NM Los Alamos - 26 Sep 2002 Lunchtime - My local graveyarder. Transmitter is in Whiterock community several miles away from the Los Alamos townsite (good!), and is practically unlistenable at night in Los Alamos due to co-channel interference. Sometimes I wonder if they power down to 250 watts after dark, but I suppose not. 1kW-U (AR-4080) (New - #71, NM #25)
1500 KABR USA NM Alamo Community - 14 Jan 2004 1200 - With the 4 kHz IF filter from the dead DX440 installed in the car radio, I can actually hear stuff on channels adjacent to strong signals now. Adjacent to KRSN 1490 I heard a woman speaking in a Native American language (Navajo, I guess), then at TOH, a slightly accented "It's Twelve O'clock, and the station you're listening to is KABR." then into some C&W music. 1kW-D (ford) (New - #181, NM #34)
KSTP USA MN Saint Paul - 17 Oct 2002 1757 - 50kW/50kW (AR-4080) (New - #94, MN #1)
1510 KOAZ USA NM Isleta - 13 Feb 2012 1430 - "One-Oh-Three-Seven, The Oasis" -- KOAZ is still stunting, but today there is a new audio loop. Now it's one piece of music, some kind of new-age mood music, interrupted a couple of times for announcements. One announcement invites listeners to call in on the comment line, phone number 505-931-1037. The other announcement informs about a "brand new radio station" coming at noon on Feb. 14, and gives some info on what kind of music will be playing. Both announcements are by station owner Martha Whitman. No mention of call signs this time, or the 1510 frequency. [Audio Clip]. (Relog - new audio loop)
KOAZ USA NM Isleta - 11 Feb 2012 1625 - New station noted on the air today stunting, playing the same few songs over and over with this announcement in between each: "KOAZ and K279BP are One-Oh-Three-Seven, The Oasis. Listen at noon on Tuesday, February 14th, Valentines Day." A bit weak here in Los ALamos, and subject to a bit of splash from hard to null local KRSN 1490. This station took over the KABR 1500 license when KABR went to FM, and changed frequency, callsign, transmitter site and power. Now 5kW-D/4.2kW-C/25 Watts-N, diplexing off one of the towers in the KTBL 1050 array. 68 miles. (M37V) (New - #323, NM #45)
KLLB USA UT New Jordan - 07 Feb 2012 0800 - Heard on the car radio this morning on the way to work, briefly over KFNN. Black Gospel type programming, with station ID at top of hour. Supposed to be only 1000 watts during critical hours, but sounded like full power to me. 10kw-D/1kW-C, (Rodeo) (New - #320, UT #16)
KCUV USA CO Littleton - 04 Sept 2003 0100 - Good with MOYL. According to Scott Fybush, the MOYL is temporary programming until station is sold off. Quick callsign ID at TOH. Swapped calls with KNRC, which is now on 1150 kHz where KCUV used to be. 10kW/1.3kW (Relog - Call sign change)

1610 Unid. ?? ?? ?? - 28 Nov 2006 2200 - A mystery test tone is being heard by DXers from coast to coast on this frequency tonight. I can even hear it underneath our local TIS station, so it's apparently a very strong signal. (ST-665) UPDATE: - 29 Nov 2006 - The mystery signal continues into today, with several DXers in the east reporting that it was audible all day long. Consensus of DXers with the ability to determine the approximate direction the signal is coming from seems to be that the signal emanates from DC/VA/NC/TN area, and speculation as to who is responsible is rampant. One hypothesis was shot down when Chris Johnson phoned Kintronic Labs in Bristol TN, and was told, no it's not them doing the testing. Other hypotheses are Lawrence Behr Associates in Greenville NC, and The Military at Fort Meade MD burning in a transmitter before shipping it overseas. Great quote from Brock Whaley: "Thanks to all the DX'ers tuning in, the tone on 1610 just beat Radio Disney in the Arbitron overnights." UPDATE: - 04 Dec 2006 - It has become a little clearer what's going on here. A note from Kent Winrich (who apparently knows or is somehow invloved) posted on some of the DXing groups a couple days ago indicates the signal is for antenna testing purposes:
Date: 01 Dec. 2006
Subject: The real deal on 1610

OK folks, here is what I can give you on the 1610 signal.

First of all it is a legit and approved signal. It is for
antenna testing and is running 10kW on the East Coast. It
is strictly a 1kHz tone. There will be nothing else
transmitted. So you dont need tolook for any FSK.

The 1610 signal is now off the air, but there is more
fun to be had.

Starting this morning (Friday) at 0900 (EST) the antenna
testing will resume on 1020 and will run until 0700 Sunday
morning. The 1020 signal will be shut down Sunday at 0700.

Tuesday look for the signal on 590 at 0900 (EST) and run
until 0700 Friday. Friday will finish the antenna testing.

We would be most interested in any FIM readings you get
including location, date, and time. If you dont have a FIM,
an RS(T) report would be great. Again include date, time,
location and a general report. Any audio reports would be
fun (heck I am a DXer after all)

If you have any readings from the 1610 signal, please feel
free to forward them to me.

I took a reading at Fayetteville, NC yesterday at 1300 EST
and got a 700uV.

Kent Winrich
Speculation now is that these tests are preparation for putting propaganda broadcasts to Cuba on the air when El Maximo finally succumbs...

Since I don't keep up with email very well on the weekends, I missed the 1020 kHz test. Probably would have been covered by KCKN anyway. I will set up to record 590 kHz overnight starting tomorrow, so I may have a shot at that one. (Tentative)
